This presentation will cover Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMDs) including prevalence, presentation of symptoms, types of PMDs, assessment, and methods of treatment. It is for anyone wanting to understand more about Postpartum Depression and how to support those affected. We welcome all mental health professionals, those working in early childhood development, as well as curious mothers and fathers.
Objectives:
Participants will understand risk factors for PMDs, how to talk with women and their family members about PMDs and the impact of PMDs on the family and newborn and treatment modalities.
Participants should be able to recognize PMDs and make recommendations for treatments in an empathetic and encouraging manner.
Participants will emphasize to new moms or dads dealing with PMDs the following:
Persons with PMDs are not alone, that other parents of newborns experience this, connection and support help.
Persons with PMDs are not to blame, it is not something they caused nor is it a reflection of your ability as a mother or father.
Persons with PMDs with help will get better, all symptoms are treatable, it is a sign of strength to reach out, and it will get easier.
