This engaging and informative presentation explores the essential role of sensory systems in children’s functioning and development. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how various sensory systems impact behavior, learning, and overall well-being. We will also examine how brain-based challenges can affect sensory processing, leading to difficulties in self-regulation and daily activities. Finally, participants will leave with practical, sensory-based strategies, ideas, and activities to support sensory development and regulation in children, helping them thrive in various environments.
Presenter, Melissa Cox, an Occupational Therapist, earned her B.S. in Occupational Science and M.S. in Occupational Therapy from the University of Buffalo in 2015. With nearly a decade of pediatric experience, she has spent eight years at The Florida Center, collaborating across programs like the FASD clinic, Starfish Academy, and Mental Health. As the Special Needs Liaison at Starfish Academy, she connects families, teachers, and therapists to support early intervention. A dedicated member of the FASD team, she integrates multidisciplinary care to address each child’s unique needs. Melissa has advanced training in executive function, sensory integration, self-regulation, feeding, trauma-informed care, and more. She is passionate about building trust with children and fostering their growth through engaging, supportive interactions.
